Types of Treatment

Children and Parenting Services

Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP): This program is a dyadic, relationship-based treatment for parents and young children ages 0 to 6, which aims to help restore normal developmental functioning in the wake of domestic violence and trauma. CPP concentrates on restoring the attachment relationships that are negatively affected by violence, establishing a sense of safety and trust within the parent–child relationship and addressing the co-constructed meaning of the event or trauma shared by parent and child.

Principles of Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT): This program is a dyadic behavioral intervention for children ages 2 to 7 and their parents or caregivers that focuses on decreasing externalizing child behavior problems (e.g., defiance, aggression), increasing child social skills and cooperation, and improving the parent-child attachment relationship. It teaches parents traditional play-therapy skills to use as social reinforcers of positive child behavior and traditional behavior management skills to decrease negative child behavior.

Standard Triple P Parenting: This program provides parents with broadly focused parenting support and intervention on a one-to-one basis. The program supports parents who have concerns about their child’s behavior or development across various settings (e.g. disobedience in community settings, fighting and aggression, refusing to stay in bed or eat healthy meals). Over 10 sessions, parents identify the causes of child behavior problems and set their own goals for change. They learn a range of parenting strategies to promote and develop positive behavior for their child. The practitioner’s focus is on generalization-enhancement strategies to promote parental autonomy throughout the intervention process.

Principles of Incredible Years: This program focuses on developing skills to understand and recognize feelings, solve problems, manage anger, and develop and maintain friendships. Usually run as an 18 week group with 4-6 children, the principles of this program can be used with ages 3 to 8 who are struggling with interpersonal relationships, emotional regulation, problem solving skills and anger management skills.

Adult Services

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR): Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories (Shapiro, 1989a, 1989b). Shapiro’s (2001) Adaptive Information Processing model posits that EMDR therapy facilitates the accessing and processing of traumatic memories and other adverse life experience to bring these to an adaptive resolution. After successful treatment with EMDR therapy, affective distress is relieved, negative beliefs are reformulated, and physiological arousal is reduced.

Principles of Seeking Safety: Seeking Safety is a present-focused therapy that helps clients attain safety from trauma (including PTSD) and substance abuse by emphasizing coping skills, grounding techniques, and education.

Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM): Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM)® Training is a program designed to teach skills to clinicians working with children and adults with traumatic stress reactions. TRM is a mind-body approach and focuses on the biological basis of trauma and the automatic, defensive ways that the human body responds when faced with perceived threats to self and others, including the responses of “tend and befriend”, fight, flight and freeze.TRM explores the concept of resiliency and how to restore balance to the body and the mind after traumatic experiences.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy: The Gottman Method is an approach to couples therapy that includes an assessment of the relationship and integrates research-based interventions based on the Sound Relationship House theory. It is an evidence-based form of couples therapy that strives to assist couples in achieving a deeper sense of understanding, awareness, empathy, and connectedness within their relationships that ultimately leads to heightened intimacy and interpersonal growth. By combining therapeutic interventions with couples exercises, this type of therapy helps couples identify and address the natural defenses that hinder effective communication and bonding.
